Educators Corner
The Cordell Hull Foundation for
International Education is designated to sponsor J-1 visas for elementary
and secondary-school exchange teacher visitors by the U.S. Department of
State. Exchange teachers from more than fifty countries of the world
participate. The Teacher Exchange Program provides for sponsorship of J-1
visas for foreign teachers over a 1-3 year period.
The Cordell Hull Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3)
corporation, is active in sponsoring exchange
programs for qualifying teachers from all over the world. Teachers hail from
over fifty countries including
Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Denmark,
Egypt, El Salvador, Ecuador, England, France, Germany,
Greece, Guatemala, Honduras, Hungary, India, Ireland, Italy,
Lebanon, Luxembourg, Mexico, Nepal,
The Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Panama, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Scotland, Spain, Sri Lanka, Switzerland,
Taiwan,
Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Wales.
After enjoying the experience of teaching in the United States on a
temporary basis, teachers return home to share positive memories and feedback on American culture.
Teacher Exchange
Programs continue to grow as as our programs and services expand in
popularity.
Several hundred J-1 Exchange
visitor teachers are sponsored by the Cordell Hull Foundation every year
throughout the U.S.,
most in private and charter schools supporting a dual immersion or
international Baccalaureate curriculum. The program encompasses schools across the U.S. in which CHF co-sponsors J-1 exchange teachers for bilingual, immersion, ESL, Science,
Math, Special Education, and other language programs.
Teachers are
contracted by the school, school district or state education system on a
temporary basis for a period of one year, extendable to three years. Participants return to their native countries to exercise skills and
knowledge acquired in the United States, thus strengthening the ties and
communications which unite us with other nations.
Since 1962, CHF teachers have instructed thousands of students under
federal, state, and local bilingual and bi-cultural programs. Most programs
involve foreign languages or bilingual programs in French, Spanish, German
or Greek.
To qualify for J-1 Visa Exchange Visitor status, all teachers must
have at least three years of teaching experience in their respective
countries and meet other requirements.
The Foundation has established partnerships in China to bring Chinese
language teachers to the U.S. to participate in exchange
programs in several states.

Message
from President
Marianne Mason
Since our founding in
1951, the Foundation has successfully established programs in U.S. schools
sponsoring thousands of exchange teacher visitors.
The work of CHF, a not-for-profit
501(c)(3) organization
based in New York City, is
dedicated to Mr. Hull, the former U.S. Secretary of State and Nobel Peace
Laureate honored primarily for his efforts as prime architect of the United
Nations. In keeping with the late Secretary’s wishes, we seek to promote
comity among nations through education and cultural exchange. We are proud
of this record, the relationships with our excellent schools and-of
course-our outstanding teachers.
Due to the
widespread shortage of qualified teachers in many areas of the country, the demand for native-speaking language teachers, and
English-speaking Math, Science, Special Ed and ESL teachers, has expanded. Numerous
educators have shared with us the frustration of not being able to hire
language teachers owing to the perceived complexity of the visa process
or, we are told, the prohibitive legal costs frequently incurred in steering visa
applications to successful conclusion.
Feel free to browse
this webpage to learn more about the J-1 visa teacher exchange program and
that which we stand ready and able to do for you.
A primary
benefit of living in another country is biculturalism: in the process of
adjusting to living in different set of values and customs, simultaneously
obtaining a more objective view of one’s own country and culture. The
process usually involves a degree of culture shock and is somewhat
uncomfortable in the beginning - for several months. But eventually
most foreign teachers find ways to adapt to and enjoy many aspects of the
new culture.
One important
goal of the Cordell Hull Foundation is to offer teachers the opportunity to
grow and develop their capacities, broaden and deepen their outlook,
increase their objectivity, and develop a more realistic practical sense of
how the world works. It is not a simple or easy adjustment but most
participants experience opportunities for expanded individual human
potential, greater independence and self-esteem.

All-Saints-Day Tribute to deLesseps S. "Toni" Morrison, former Exe cutive
Director of the Cordell Hull Foundation for 22 years.
While delesseps Toni Morrison served in the Louisiana State
legislature, he obtained a tuition waiver for CHF exchange teachers in
state universities. For more than a decade, hundreds of CHF
teachers in the Spanish program obtained their Masters degrees in
Education tuition-free. Numerous teachers in the Spanish program
benefited from this educational opportunity until two years after his
death in 1996. Applicants must prove sponsorship in the Cordell
Hull Foundation Teacher Exchange Program in order to be eligible.
The J-1 visa Teacher Exchange Program was organized under the Mutual
Exchange Act of 1961, formed to increase mutual understanding and
assist in the development of friendly, sympathetic and peaceful
relations between the United States and other nations. |
Pictured with her students is Julieta Montiel, a Panamanian
teacher who utilized the Cordell Hull Foundation college tuition waiver to
obtain her Masters degree in Education.
Since the turn of
the century, the Cordell Hull Foundation teacher program has doubled. Other initiatives include a funding campaign to support a
documentary film on the life of Cordell Hull. The deLesseps S.
"Toni" Morrison Summer Studies Program in Antigua, Guatemala supports short-term
intensive study trips for Americans to become fluent in
Spanish. Students have the opportunity to live with a Guatemalan family
while enjoying expert one-on-one instruction from native-speaking
specialists at the Escuela San Jose el Viejo.
